What are the characteristics of Nigerian cuisine? How has Nigerian cuisine been influenced by other culinary cultures in the world? What crops are grown in Nigeria geography? What are the most commonly used foods and spices in Nigerian cooking?

Nigerian culinary culture is very diverse and rich, reflecting the traditions of more than 200 ethnic groups. Nigerian food is based on local produce and protein sources and is often combined with a carbohydrate base (for example, cassava or yam), some type of protein, and a variety of spices.

Some of the favorite dishes in Nigerian cuisine are:

Jollof Rice:
This rice dish is prepared with peppers, onions, tomatoes and various spices and is often served with chicken, fish or other meats.

Egusi Soup:
This soup is made from egusi (pumpkin seeds) seeds and is usually served with vegetables, spices and meat, fish or seafood.

Pounded Yam:
This is a traditional by-product made from yam root and eaten with soup or sauce.

Dodo (Fried Banana):
This dish, which is usually served as a side dish, is made by frying ripe bananas.

To the water:
This street food is a type of kebab in which the meat is marinated with spices and grilled.

Spices most commonly used in Nigerian culinary culture include paprika, curry, ginger, nutmeg, mint, thyme, and African local spices ugba (oily palm kernel) and iru (fermented ethnic nut).

Characteristics of Nigerian cuisine include the heavy use of local produce and proteins, the use of different spices and herbs, and dishes that are often built on a mixed carbohydrate and protein base.

Also, Nigerian cuisine varies greatly due to the ethnic diversity that varies from region to region.

Nigerian cuisine has been influenced by other cuisines in West Africa and the former colonial power of England. For example, Jollof Rice is popular in many parts of West Africa, and its baked goods reflect the British influence popular in Nigeria.

Nigeria's geography allows a wide variety of plants to grow. In the drier areas in the north, crops such as peanuts and maize are grown, while in the more humid areas in the south, bananas, cassava and palm trees are grown.

Foods and spices most commonly used in Nigerian cooking include cassava, yam, plantain, beef, chicken, fish, paprika, curry, ginger, and nutmeg. Local African spices such as ugba and iru are also frequently used.
